Mt. St. Helens and Elk Lake
The last time I visited this area was only three years after the May 18, 1980 eruption. There was very little recovering vegetation then, and the volcanic ash made everything look like you were on the moon. Today, it's a different story. The recovery of vegetation and wildlife has happened much faster than anyone had predicted. The blast zone and devastation areas are still there to be seen, of course, but more and more, beauty is encroaching on the scar.
