Deepwood Estate

Deepwood Estate

In 1893 Dr. Luke A. Port bought a portion of a six acre block in Salem, Oregon, and hired William C. Knighton to design their home, his first residential project. Eventually, Mr. Knighton went on to become Oregon's first State Architect.br/ br/ The home was built for a cost of $15,000. That's when the average home of the area cost $1,000. In two years Dr. Port sold the home to George and Willie Bingham. The Binghams lived in the home until 1924, when it was sold to Clifford Brown.br/ br/ Clifford Brown married Alice Bretherton in 1908 and the couple lived at Deepwood until his death in 1927. Alice continued to live in the home, and by 1930, she was calling the house and gardens ldquo;Deepwoodrdquo; after the childrenrsquo;s book ldquo; The Hollow Tree and Deepwoodsrdquo; by Albert Bigelow Paine, a favorite of her sons. In 1935 she had the name Deepwood formally registered as a legal farm name. Alice resided in the house until their health required relocation in 1968.br/ br/ The city of Salem acquired the home in December 1971 and the Friends of Deepwood was organized in 1974 to manage the estate.br/ br/ In 2002, Sunset Magazine named Deepwood as one of the four ldquo;Best Historic Homesrdquo; in its ldquo;Best of the Westrdquo; section.
